See what changed

Compare this month with your target and previous performance instead of reviewing one number in isolation.

Separate profit from cash

See whether stronger sales and profit are improving the money available to run the business.

Catch pressure building

Keep receivables, payables, rising costs and weak margins visible before they become next month's problem.

Compare against plan

See where the month beat plan, missed plan or moved in the wrong direction.

Finish with decisions

Turn the review into clear priorities, owners and next steps while the month is still fresh.

A monthly review should explain the business, not just summarise it.

Keep the review focused on the numbers that change decisions. Compare performance, identify the cause of weak spots and record the actions to carry into next month.

How to use your Monthly Financial Review Template

Do not start with opinions. Start with the month that actually happened.

1

Bring in the core numbers

Add the month's revenue, cost of sales, operating expenses, profit and cash figures from your records.

MetricExample
Revenue420,000
Net Profit62,000
Closing Cash91,500
2

Compare performance

Compare actual performance with the previous month and your target. Focus on material changes, not noise.

MetricExample
Revenue+5.0%
Gross Margin-2 pts
Expenses+11.6%
3

Explain the movement

Ask what caused the change. A falling margin, higher receivables or rising delivery cost needs an explanation before it needs a solution.

IssueExample
MarginSupplier costs increased
ReceivablesMore partial payments
CashStock paid earlier
4

Set next-month actions

Choose the few actions that would materially improve the next month and write them down while the review is fresh.

ActionExample
Collect overdue balances05 Oct
Review supplier pricing08 Oct
Protect gross marginOwner

Good monthly reviews turn numbers into decisions.

What is a Monthly Financial Review?

A monthly financial review is a repeatable check of the numbers that explain how the business performed, where pressure is building and what deserves action next.

What happened this month, why did it happen and what changes next?

It brings profit, cash, customer balances, supplier obligations, targets and observations into one conversation. That makes it easier to separate a genuinely improving business from a business that simply had a strong revenue month.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Monthly Financial Review Template free?

Yes. The template is free to use. You will be able to use the Google Sheets version online or download the Excel version when delivery links are available. No sign up is required.

What should a monthly financial review include?

A useful review should cover revenue, gross profit, net profit, cash movement and closing cash, money customers still owe, money owed to suppliers, major cost changes, performance against target or the previous month, and clear actions for the next month.

How often should I complete the review?

Complete the full review once each month after the month's records are reasonably complete. If your business moves quickly, check selected numbers such as sales, cash and unpaid balances weekly while keeping the full review monthly.

Is this the same as a Profit & Loss Statement?

No. A Profit & Loss Statement focuses on revenue, direct costs, operating expenses and profit. A monthly financial review uses those numbers alongside cash, receivables, payables, targets and observations to decide what happened and what should change next.

Why review cash if the business made a profit?

Profit and available cash are not the same thing. A business can record a profitable month while cash is tied up in unpaid customer balances, stock or other timing differences. Reviewing both helps prevent a strong profit number from hiding a cash squeeze.

Should I compare with last month or with my budget?

Use both when you can. Comparing with last month shows direction. Comparing with budget or target shows whether the business performed as planned. A number can improve from last month and still miss the target.

Do I need accounting knowledge to use this template?

No. The template is designed to make the monthly review practical for a business owner. You still need reliable source records, and complex accounting, tax or reporting questions may require help from a qualified professional.

What should I do after the monthly review?

Choose the few issues that materially affect profit, cash or risk, assign an action and deadline, then bring those actions into the next month's review. If everything is a priority, the review has not forced a real decision.

Useful for

Built for owners who want to understand the month before starting the next one.

When a spreadsheet is no longer enough

Your monthly review is only as good as the records you have to rebuild it from.

A spreadsheet can help you review the month. But someone still has to pull sales from one place, payments from another, stock from somewhere else, customer balances from messages and expenses from receipts before the review can even begin.

  • Sales and payments stay connected.
  • Stock movement feeds the same business picture.
  • Customer balances stay visible before month-end.
  • Finance decisions start from cleaner records.
